Croeso i dosbarth Swan
Welcome to Year 6
Our context for the autumn is
Through this context the children will learn about about life during this time. They will also be developing their skills in Literacy and Numeracy.
Our class teacher is: Mrs Kilgour
In Literacy we will be continuing to develop our comprehension and response to reading skills. It is really important that everyone reads every day to make sure we are ready for high school. We will have reading tests to monitor the children's progress. We will also be learning about poetry and non chronological reports linked with our context. We will have weekly spelling tests on a Friday to enhance our skills.
This term we are focusing on developing our reasoning skills and applying them to a range of problems. We will be focusing on our number skills and will continue to have our CLIC and Big Maths tests on a Friday.
All homework will be given on a Friday to be completed over the weekend. This will usually be Literacy and Numeracy based but at times there will be mini projects linked to our context.
PE is on Wednesday. Please ensure your child wears their kit, jogging bottoms (black or navy) with a plain T-shirt and trainers to school. Please remember no jewellery is to be worn in school. Every other day your child should be in full school uniform. Your child can gain Dojo points for each day they are in uniform and PE kit.
Attendance is so important, every minute late or days absent all add up and ultimately mean time not used for learning and improving. As year 6 is such an important year it is vital that your child is in everyday.
Please ensure your child is in school on time, doors are open at 8.40 and breakfast club starts at 8am. We would really like to be the best class for attendance this year but we can only do that if we work together and challenge ourselves to 'be in to win it!'
Year 5 and 6 are going to be taking part in the accelerated reading scheme, they will be giving 20 minute independent reading time every day. AR is a computer program that helps to manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at his/her own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer - passing the quiz is an indication that your child has understood what has been read. AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher then uses to help the child set targets and ongoing reading practice.
Please help your child with any homework they bring home. Each week they have books available on their Bug Club account and maths activities linked to what has been taught in class that week. We also send reading books home for you to enjoy together, please sign your child's reading record each time you spend some time reading together.
