Spring Term Curriculum Overview

Look at how busy we have been!

Miss Watkins will be in class Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Mrs O'Neill will be in school all week, but teaching in Class Seals on a Thursday and Friday. Mrs Donaldson is always with us in Class Seals!

Year 2 is one of the most important years in your child's school life.  It is essential that we work together to ensure they learn as much as they can over the coming months.

Please spend time every night listening to your children read - we cannot stress how important this is, particularly in year 2!

Please provide your children with a healthy fruit snack each day.  This will be kept safe in their own tray.  Fruit can be purchased in the playground each morning for a reasonable price.

PE takes place every Friday afternoon.  Please send children in PE kit - we do not want children changing in school!

PE kit consists of: Black jogging bottoms or shorts (weather permitting) and your child's PE T shirt in the colour of their house team.

Every child in class Seals has their own reading bag and assigned reading day (see table below).  Once you have read with your child, please sign the reading record and make sure that you return their bag and books on their day, so that we can read the book with your child and then it can be changed - make any comments you would like us to know, for example, words that your child found tricky or if the book was too easy/ challenging.  If you would like more than one reading book - please ask - we highly encourage reading at home - particularly in such an important year in school!

Your child has been assigned an account on the fantastic website - activelearnprimary (see link below).  This is a brilliant website that encourages reading in a fun way, with rewards and games to unlock as your child reads more books and logs more time on the site.  We have assigned 6 reading books to your children that are correctly levelled.  Please encourage your children to spend time using this fantastic resource.  We are able to see when your child has read books on the site so that we can assign more.  For a demonstration, help using the site or issues with login details, please see Miss Watkins or Mrs O'Neill.

The welsh government target for attendance is 95%. Research demonstrates that there is a strong link between the amount of absence in a school and the qualifications that a pupil achieves. If a pupil misses 17 days of school or more a year, this often leads to a drop of a GSCE grade across all subjects.
Of pupils who miss between 10% and 20% of school, only 35% manage to achieve five A* to C GSCEs including English and mathematics. This compares to 73% of pupils with over 95% attendance achieving five A* to Cs including English and mathematics. (DfE July 2011)
Every lesson in school is vitally important. If your child misses school, they will find it difficult to catch up with the learning and as a result could fall behind and not achieve their full potential.
